The Road to Wonder

Hey there, y'all!

I'm thrilled to share the first entry in my dev log for Little Witch Wonder, a game that combines my love for retro gaming with a fresh take on puzzle-adventure gameplay. As a lifelong gamer who grew up mesmerized by the enchanting worlds of 80s and 90s console and PC games, I wanted to create something that both honors those classic and innovates with modern gameplay.

So, what is Little Witch Wonder?

Built in GB Studio 4, Little Witch Wonder is a 2D top down puzzle game that follows the journey of Wonder, a young witch whose curiosity is as big as her heart. Set in the cozy Whispering Woods, the game invites players to solve puzzles, uncover secrets, and learn about the world around them. With no keys or power-ups, your progress is powered purely by knowledge and discovery.

I hope you'll join me on my development journey. I've toyed with the ideas for games a few times, but this is my first full effort as a solo-dev. I'm pretty excited and hope to feel proud when I release the game.

The idea for Little Witch Wonder began as a series of sketches and notes about a world where magic is not just in the wands and spells, but in the very fabric of the environment. I wanted to create a game where the joy comes from exploration and the thrill of solving puzzles that feel as natural to the setting as the trees and the wind. Taking inspiration from classic Gameboy games, I want to make something with the heart and soul of Gameboy classics but also challenging players with a more modern puzzle solving philosophy. There are no brute force puzzles here.

In this devlog, I'll share insights into my development process, from the initial concept to the final touches that bring the Whispering Woods to life. You'll see behind-the-scenes looks at design and get a glimpse of how I'm building puzzles that are challenging, unique, and fair.

I'm just at the beginning, and there's much to do. But I believe in this game and its potential to spark wonder and joy in players just as those classic games did for me. Stay tuned for regular updates, deep dives into my design decisions, and interactive posts where your feedback can help shape the world of Wonder.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Whether you're a fellow developer, a fan of retro games, or someone who loves a good puzzle, I hope you'll find something to enjoy in Little Witch Wonder.

Happy gaming,

DeusTex
